While you are still fully employed but planning for the next step in your career journey, it’s important to solidify a foundation for networking with others who share your interests. Mentoring new professionals will enable them to innovate, achieve, and lead. This is a time when you have the opportunity to be recognized for your contributions by being elevated to an IEEE Senior Member or Fellow, or more actively participating in publications or conferences.

When you have decided to return to work, networking is important along with continuing to gain insights on technical trends. You can build those connections and gain new technical insights and knowledge through IEEE Societies, Chapters, and Sections. Contributing to publications both as an author and editor or serving as a conference organizer will also help establish additional connections and recognition for your hard work.

While remaining active in semi-retirement, there are many opportunities to contribute within the technology community. Mentoring and volunteer work helps not only the next generation continue your work but also helps drive innovation. Bringing your experience to IEEE by contributing to publications through authorship or holding an IEEE volunteer position can also assist others, given your knowledge.

As a current volunteer, you have the opportunity to give back to your community with your wealth of knowledge and continue to network and gain recognition. At this stage, you can share your experience and knowledge through mentoring those beginning to participate in publications, conferences, and tutorials. You can also engage in volunteer opportunities during IEEE Day, IEEE Education Week, or other IEEE initiatives to continue to contribute to the profession and inspire the next generation.
