Charles LeGeyt Fortescue Scholarship

The Charles LeGeyt Fortescue Scholarship was established in 1939 as a memorial to Charles LeGeyt, in recognition of his valuable contributions to the field of electrical engineering. The application deadline for the 2025 - 2026 academic year is Monday, 5 May 2025.  Applications will be accepted beginning 1 Feb 2025.

Award information

The scholarship carries a stipend of up to US$24,000 and is awarded via a trust for which the IEEE Foundation serves as trustee. This scholarship is awarded annually for one year of full-time graduate work in electrical engineering at an engineering school of recognized standing located in the US.

To be eligible, the student must be a resident of the United States of America, have majored in the field of electrical engineering, and have received a bachelor's degree from an engineering college of recognized standing. The scholarship will be awarded to a full-time (per the guidelines of the full-time program in which the student will be enrolled), first-year graduate student pursuing a Master’s degree program (or a doctoral degree program if it is the first graduate degree for the student). In the event the college is conducting a combined B.S. and M.S. degree program, the student in the penultimate year would be eligible for the award, which would apply in the final year of the program.

The recipient of this scholarship may hold or receive other scholarships for the same academic year. Earnings for work that is directly related to the graduate study is also allowed. This scholarship may be supplemented by the graduate institution with other scholarships, assistantships, or tuition scholarship support in accordance with their internal guidelines for total support. The recipient must pursue full-time graduate work in electrical engineering.

Applicants are required to submit certified transcripts from all colleges/universities attended. Three letters of recommendation from college/university professors who are familiar with the applicant's work are also required.

Application guidelines:

  • Complete the entire application form.
  • Submit certified transcripts from all colleges/universities attended.
  • Provide letters of recommendation from three college/university professors who are familiar with your work.
  • The complete name, title, and address of the reference must be clearly noted on the letter. Letters of recommendation should address the following areas: the applicant's ability to perform graduate work; originality and creativity; character; diligence and social responsibility; ability to lead; ability to communicate; where the reference would rank the applicant among students he/she has known in this field in recent years.

All application documentation must be received by the first Monday after 30 April each year.

Notification: Recipients are scheduled to be approved during the June IEEE Board of Directors meeting. Recipients will be notified following the meeting. The unsuccessful nominators will be notified of the status of their nomination shortly thereafter.
